Also, you have to got to love the optimism of Rit who started such a massive project in her life. Although she was not able to see her grand project to come to life, you can still feel that her soul must be really happy that her work became a common interest for so many people to come together and complete it.

The progress of this unfinished work can be followed on the Instagram page where Shannon has gathered people from all around the state to work on this massive project. Shannon writes, “You know my love of the estate sales and also the fact that I cannot help but be attracted to the unfinished projects.”

Shannon writes, “Yesterday, fate had me brought to the Mount Prospect Illinois were the house of Rita Smith was located.  Rita was, without a doubt, a great stitcher who had a deep love for the State Flowers and the USA itself. According to my online research, when she passed away, she was 99 years old.”

I bought her work of embroidery map which had state flowers on it. The project of her was simply breathtaking. I then went upstairs and found a box filled with all sorts of fabric. It was then I discovered that Rita had actually started a massive quilting project.”

I went through the box and saw that Rita had prepped and cut out all the squares and had already started to transfer the designs on these cut square pieces.  She started her stitch project with New Jersey.”

I bought the box and now as I cannot complete the stitching project on my own; now, I am wondering f we can do the crowd stitching to finish this project for Rita.

instagram

Like I mail you guys a square each and then you complete it and send it to me back and then I will host a big Quilting bee to complete it? Is anyone interested in order to help Rita’s craft rest in peace?

The response of this request was massive as 1000+ people offered to help and 100 people were chosen for the crowd stitching project from all across the USA and Canada. 50 of them would be stitching the state while 50 would be stitching a star each.

She sent the work by mail to each one of them.

Shannon said, “A Local quilting studio in Chicago offered us the space to handle the quilting phase for stitching all of the hexagonal shapes pieces in one massive quilt.”
