  • In 1965, Johnson began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech University. The following year, he worked at “Picayune Memorial High School” in Picayune, Mississippi.
  • From 1967 to 1970, he worked as an assistant coach at various universities such as Wichita State University and Iowa State University.
  • In 1973, he returned to Arkansas as the National Defense Coordinator and continued to hold this position for the next three years.
  • In 1977, he joined the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. He continued to hold this position for a year, training Randy Holloway, David Logan and Al Chesley.
