Samsung Galaxy S10+ can be hacked by 3D Printed Fingerprint

The ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner in the Samsung mobile phones can actually be fooled with the help of a 3D printed fingerprint.

For this, you only need to have access to the fingerprint of a device’s owner as well as a cheap 3D printer. As for the whole process to complete, it only takes about a few minutes which will result in a fingerprint copy that will be able to successfully open the mobile phone.

The whole process was explained recently by an Imgur user under the name Darkshark. The person took the image of his fingerprint from a wine glass with his other phone and managed to make a perfect copy of the fingerprint with the help of 3DS Max software on an AnyCubic Photon LCD printer. As for the fingerprint itself, it was created on a simple piece of resin.

The result of this experiment was a fingerprint that could actually unlock the Samsung Galaxy S10+. According to Darkshark, in some cases, this fingerprint copy worked as perfect as the real thing.

As for the printer used by Darkshark, it was only worth about 400 dollars. For the whole process, it also required a specific software and a little know how to creating the 3D printed fingerprint.

Darkshark also made the following claim,

“I can do this entire process in less than 3 minutes and remotely start the 3D print so that it’s done by the time I get to it. Most banking apps only require fingerprint authentication so I could have all of your info and spend your money in less than 15 minutes if your phone is secured by fingerprint alone.”

The biometric identification security features like a fingerprint as well as facial recognition have been deemed unsafe when compared with an ordinary typed password for a long time. Samsung also in its documents never stated that the fingerprint scanner is not that secure. On the company’s web page, they sated the following statement, “With the new ultrasonic fingerprint ID technology, there are no tradeoffs. You don’t have to sacrifice user experience for security.”
