All those emails from obnoxious marketers are not only crowding up the inbox space. These emails are also tracking the users whether they have opened the email or not. These marketers have embedded tracking software into the message by a software called Mail Chimp, which keeps track of whether the user receiver has opened the email or where they were when they opened the email.
This works with the help of one tracking pixel that has been embedded in the email. This pixel is usually hidden within a link or an image. When a receiver opens up such emails, these emails then send this pixel back to the company server.
Fortunately, there are some really simple steps that can easily help people from avoiding tracking. This one step is to stop these automatically loading images as this is where spot where these tracking pixels are embedded.
Below are the steps for disabling the automatic image loading in the widely used mobile and desktop email apps.
Gmail:-
- Click the ‘gear” icon located on the top right corner of the page to have access to the settings.
- Select the ‘General” tab and then go to “Images”
- Select the option “Ask before displaying external images”
- Scroll down the page and then tap “Save Changes”
Microsoft Outlook:-
- Click on the “Files”
- Click on “Options”
- Select “Trust Center” and tap the button “Trust Center Settings”
- Select both the boxes that are labeled as “Don’t download pictures automatically in standard HTML messages or RSS items” and “Don’t download pictures in encrypted or signed HTML email messages”.
Microsoft Mail:-
- Tap the “Gear” icon located on the bottom left corner of the page to open the settings menu
- From the settings, select the “reading pane”
- Now at the bottom right of the menu turn off the option “Automatically download external images and style formats except S/MIME Mail” and “Automatically download external images and style formats for S/MIME Mail”.
- For those who use multiple accounts, they should also check the option “Apply to all accounts”.
Apple Mail:-
- Go to “mail”
- Go to “preferences”
- Tap the tab labeled “Viewing”
- Uncheck the option “Load remote content in messages”
Android Gmail:-
- Tap the 3 lines located on the top left corner of the screen
- Scroll down to the menu and then select “Settings”
- Tap the email account you use
- Scroll down and select the option “Images”
- Tap on the option “Ask before displaying external images”
iPhone:-
- Go to “Settings”
- Go to “Mail”
- Find the section “Messages”
- Turn off the “Load Remote Images”
